"Careless Whisper" is a song by the English singer George Michael. It was written by Michael and Andrew Ridgeley[4] of Wham! and was released on 24 July 1984 on the Wham! album Make It Big.

The song features a prominent saxophone riff, and has been covered by a number of artists since its first release. Information technology was released as a unmarried and became a huge commercial success around the globe. Information technology reached number one in nearly 25 countries, selling about 6 million copies worldwide—two 1000000 of them in the U.s.a..[5]

Background [edit]

Composition and writing [edit]

In 1981, Michael was working equally a DJ in the Bel Air restaurant near Bushey, Hertfordshire.[vi] Michael explained in his autobiography, Bare, that he conceptualised "Careless Whisper" based on events from his childhood. Michael wrote, "I was on my fashion to DJ at the Bel Air when I wrote 'Careless Whisper'. I accept ever written on buses, trains and in cars. It always happens on journeys... With 'Careless Whisper' I remember exactly where it get-go came to me, where I came upwardly with the sax line... I remember I was handing the coin over to the guy on the omnibus and I got this line, the sax line... I wrote it totally in my head. I worked on information technology for about iii months in my head."[7]

"When I was twelve, thirteen, I used to have to chaperone my sister, who was 2 years older, to an water ice rink at Queensway in London," he explained. "There was a girl there with long blonde pilus whose name was Jane. I was a fat boy in glasses and I had a big beat on her - though I didn't stand a gamble. My sister used to become and do what she wanted when we got to the skating rink and I would spend the afternoon swooning over this girl Jane."[8]

"A few years later, when I was xvi, I had my first human relationship with a daughter called Helen," Michael continued.

It had just started to absurd off a bit when I discovered that the blonde daughter from Queensway had moved in just effectually the corner from my school. She had moved in right next to where I used to stand and wait for my next-door neighbour, who used to give me a lift home from school. And i 24-hour interval I saw her walk downwards the path side by side to me and I thought – now where did SHE come from? She didn't know it was me. It was a few years later and I looked a lot unlike. And so nosotros played a schoolhouse disco with The Executive and she saw me singing and decided she fancied me. By this fourth dimension she was that much older and a large buxom thing – and somewhen I started seeing her. She invited me in one day when I was waiting for my lift and I was ... in heaven.[8]

Michael observed that after he stopped wearing glasses, he began getting invited to parties. "And the girl who didn't even see me when I was twelve invited me in," he noted.

And so I went out with her for a couple of months only I didn't terminate seeing Helen. I idea I was being smart – I had gone from being a total loser to existence a two-timer. And I remember my sisters used to give me a difficult time considering they plant out and they really liked the first daughter. The whole idea of "Careless Whisper" was the commencement girl finding out about the 2d – which she never did. Simply I started another human relationship with a girl called Alexis without finishing the 1 with Jane. It all got a flake complicated. Jane found out about her and got rid of me ... The whole time I thought I was being cool, existence this two-timer, but in that location actually wasn't that much emotion involved. I did experience guilty almost the get-go girl – and I take seen her since – and the idea of the song was nigh her. "Careless Whisper" was usa dancing, because we danced a lot, and the idea was – we are dancing ... simply she knows ... and it's finished.[8]

Andrew Ridgeley came up with the chord sequence on his Fender Telecaster he had received for his 18th birthday.[9] They continued to work together on the music and lyric both at Michael's firm in Radlett, and Shirlie Holliman's aunt's basement flat in Peckham, where Ridgeley was living.[ix] [10]

Demoing [edit]

The original demo was recorded by local music producer Paul Mex, in Jan 1982 aslope those for "Gild Tropicana" and "Wham Rap! (Bask What You Do)" in the front room of Ridgeley'south domicile (his parents' lounge turned into a makeshift studio) with Mex's TEAC 4-track Portastudio. Because near of the day was spent on Wham Rap!... and Ridgeley'southward mother had returned home by that bespeak, Careless Whisper had to be recorded in one take very rapidly. It featured a Doctor Rhythm drum machine, an acoustic guitar (played by Ridgeley) and a bass guitar (played past Dave W), with Michael's vocal (recorded with a microphone attached to a broom handle).[11] [12] The overall toll of the recording was £20 (largely due to the rental cost of the Portastudio) and the duo landed a deal with Innervision by Mark Dean on the strength of the demos.[13] [14]

A more complete and fully realised 2nd demo was recorded on 24 March 1982 at Halligan Band Centre, Holloway, London with a backing band and a saxophone riff.[15] However, on the same twenty-four hour period, Michael and Ridgely were called over by Dean to sign a contract in addition to the record deal, which they did at a nearby greasy spoon café. Michael recalls of that mean solar day:

"One of the nigh incredible moments of my life was hearing 'Careless Whisper' demoed properly, with a ring, a sax and everything. It was ironic that we signed the contract with Mark [Dean] that mean solar day, the solar day I finally believed we had number-one material. That aforementioned twenty-four hours we signed it all away. Simply you can never actually know what you lot are capable of, you tin never really have that foresight."[15]

Production [edit]

The vocal went through at to the lowest degree two rounds of production. The first was during a trip Michael made to Sheffield, Alabama, where he went to work with producer Jerry Wexler at Muscle Shoals Audio Studio in 1983.[16] [17] Michael was unhappy with the original version produced past Wexler, and decided to re-record and produce the vocal himself; the second version was the 1 ultimately released as a single.

Later the backing track and George's vocal had been recorded, Wexler had booked the top saxophone player from Los Angeles to fly in and practice the solo.[18] "He arrived at eleven and should have been gone by twelve", recalled Wham! manager Simon Napier-Bell. "Instead, after two hours, he was still there while anybody in the studio shuddered with embarrassment. He simply couldn't play the opening riff the mode George wanted it, the style information technology had been on the demo. But that had been fabricated two years earlier by a friend of George's who lived round the corner and played sax for fun in the pub."[eighteen]

While the saxophonist appeared to be playing the part perfectly, Michael told him, "No, information technology'southward yet non correct, you run across..." and he would lower his caput to the talkback microphone and patiently hum the part to him yet once more. "Information technology has to twitch upwards a little merely in that location! Meet...? And non too much."[eighteen]

Napier-Bong consulted with Wexler over Michael's dispute with the sax sound. "Is there actually something George wants that's different from what the sax player is playing?" Napier-Bell asked.[18] "Definitely!" replied Wexler.

I've seen things like this before. There's some tiny nuance that the sax player is somehow not getting correct. Although yous and I can't hear what information technology is, it may exist the very matter that volition brand the tape a hit. The success of popular records is then ephemeral, so unbelievably unpredictable, we just can't have the chance of being impatient. But this sax histrion's not going to go it, is he![18]

The version Wexler produced was released afterwards in the year, as a (iv:41) B-side "Special Version" on 12" in the United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland and Japan.

The record characterization Innervision was going to put out the Wexler version of "Careless Whisper" after the Club Fantastic Megamix as early as 1983. Song publisher Dick Leahy said that while he could not stop the release of the Guild Fantastic Megamix, he could stop the release of this single on the basis that as a publisher they "accept the right to grant the outset license of the recording of a tune of which he controls the copyright". He was unable to do anything about the Club Fantastic Megamix because it was already released material. He said: "Nosotros knew how large that song could be, and so it was necessary to upset a few people to end it."[19] Towards the stop of 1983, Michael was also committed to touring with Wham! to promote Fantastic, and then according to him it would not have made sense to release "Careless Whisper" as a solo single in the middle of the tour, despite information technology being part of the setlist.[20]

Michael later on went back to London's Sarm Due west's Studio 2 to re-record the track, the courage of which was done with a alive rhythm department in one take, with "loads of stuff bunged on [overdubbed] later" as Michael added, although the experience of it was basically live.[21] [22] Michael elaborated on the song'southward production and how information technology turned out in the end:

"Jerry Wexler did 1 recording of "Careless Whisper" with me. So we re-mixed that, which meant re-shooting the video and so we completely re-did the track almost four weeks earlier it was due to be released. When we originally made it I was totally in awe of Jerry Wexler and information technology was the first time that I had ever felt like that most anybody that I'd worked with. Usually I have trouble convincing myself that people know what they're doing. In this instance I had to get drunk in society to sing, I was so nervous. Anyhow, my publisher [Dick Leahy] and I had loads of discussions about whether the tape was good plenty for the vocal and whether at that place was enough of me in it because it just did not sound like me. I said 'it'southward great. Jerry'south done a great job on information technology', and for the starting time time since nosotros'd started I was blind to what was going on because the song was already two and a half years old and I simply did not have a clue well-nigh where else I could take it. Eventually I simply thought, 'sod this. I'k going to go in and do it as if information technology had never been washed before with the musicians we normally use and see what happens.' The rails was much better because I was relaxed and I think that our musicians did a much better task than the Muscle Shoals department". [22]

According to English jazz musician Dan Forshaw, saxophonist Steve Gregory had received a call to re-record the song's distinctive solo; he was the eleventh saxophone player to tape the solo, for Michael was determined to get the sound he wanted.[23] "Session musicians do not accept much thought what they are going to exist recording until they arrive, and this was the case for Steve and some other saxophonist who was ahead of him in the (queue)", Forshaw recalled.

As usual there was a lot of waiting effectually and the guy in front end of Steve threw in the towel saying, 'it's just going to be some crappy B side anyhow so I'm off'. Steve waited and then discovered that the solo wasn't that easy to play in the written central, as his old Selmer Mark 6 tenor didn't accept a top F♯ key. So, the engineer slowed the tape down so that Steve could record the solo a semitone lower than intended. Once the tape was put back to the normal speed, an 'unnatural' saxophone sound was created that sounded a bit like an Alto in the Paul Desmond vibe, but lacking a fleck more depth and darkness to the audio. George Michael had just arrived at the studio and said 'that'southward the one, that's the sax solo I want'. This could be downwardly to that whole 80s synth concept where sounds became increasingly 'manufactured', or simply that George never recognized it was 'incorrect'.[23]

The officially released single was issued in Baronial 1984, entering the Great britain Singles Nautical chart at number 12. Within ii weeks information technology was at number one, ending a nine-calendar week run at the top for "2 Tribes" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood.[iv] It stayed at number one for three weeks, going on to become the fifth best-selling unmarried of 1984 in the U.k.; outsold only past the two Frankie Goes to Hollywood tracks, "2 Tribes" and "Relax", Stevie Wonder with "I Just Called to Say I Love You", and Band Help'south "Do They Know It's Christmas?". The song besides topped the charts in 25 other countries, including the Billboard Hot 100 in the Usa in February 1985 nether the credit "Wham! featuring George Michael". Spending three weeks at the elevation in America, the vocal was after named Billboard 's number-i song of 1985. The song was #ane on the smooth radio pinnacle 500 songs of all time chart – proving its iconic condition.

Despite the success, Michael was never fond of the vocal. He said in 1991 that it "was not an integral function of my emotional development ... it disappoints me that you can write a lyric very flippantly—and not a particularly adept lyric—and it can mean so much to so many people. That's disillusioning for a writer."[19]

Music video [edit]

The official music video (which uses the shorter single version instead of the full anthology version and was directed by Duncan Gibbins, who previously directed "Wake Me Up Before Yous Go-Go") shows the guilt felt by a man (portrayed by Michael) over an affair, and his acknowledgement that his partner (Lisa Stahl) is going to find out. Madeline Andrews-Hodge plays the woman who lures George abroad. It was filmed on location in Miami, Florida, in Feb 1984[24] and features such locales as Coconut Grove and Watson Island. The final part of the video shows Michael leaning out of a top flooring balcony of Miami's Grove Towers.[25] [26]

A first original version of the video was edited with the Jerry Wexler 1983 version, and featured Andrew as a cameo, handing over a letter to a dark-haired George. This version had a more than detailed storyline, just was then re-edited later on.[27]

According to producer Jon Roseman, production of the video was "A fucking disaster".[28] According to Michael's co-star Lisa Stahl, "They lost footage of our kissing scene so nosotros had to reshoot it, which I didn't mutter about ... And so George decided he didn't like his hair so he flew his sis over from England to cut information technology and we had to reshoot more scenes."[29]

As the band felt they had "screwed upward" the video, farther footage of Michael singing the song onstage was later on shot at the Lyceum Theatre, London.[28] The video performance (1984 Version) was officially uploaded to George Michael YouTube channel on 24 October 2009. Information technology has over 834 million views as of 2022.
